NINETY SIX — At least one person is dead following a fire that raged Tuesday afternoon in Ninety Six.
Greenwood County Fire Coordinator Steve Holmes said firefighters had not yet determined the cause of the blaze, which sent thick smoke clouds and flames smoldering from the brick home at 1024 Brickyard Road. An arson team from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was called to the scene to investigate the blaze and determine its cause.

"At this time, we have no reason to think the cause is suspicious," Holmes said. "We're just going to make sure and find out."
Holmes said the incident remains under investigation as SLED and local fire officials suspended their study of the ashes late Tuesday. The victim was the only person in the home when the fire sparked and it appeared the victim did not actively struggle to escape the residence, officials said.
The fire ripped through the home just after 3:20 Tuesday afternoon, and gutted the single-story residence, leaving parts of it burned to the ground. Flames continued to burn for at least an hour as crews worked to extinguish it.
