In spring 2013, Greenwood County officials and county council members engaged in a vigorous debate as to whether the county’s aging emergency siren system should be phased out.
Now, more than a year later, the emergency siren system seems to be rolling along just fine, for the time being.


Greenwood County emergency management director George McKinney said the county currently has 20 emergency sirens up and operational.
“We are still waiting on some guidance on that,” McKinney said, in reference to the possible phasing out of the siren system. “But, we are still working them as usual. Working them and keeping them running as best we can. ... We have had some that have had some small problems, a fuse plug here and there, stuff like that. We haven’t had any major issues with them recently.”
