Bill Sandel, the Greenwood Family YMCA's first general secretary, died Wednesday at age 92.
Sandel served in that capacity from 1950-85, according to Gray Stallworth, who serves in the current version of Sandel's role with the Greenwood Family YMCA.
"He had a tremendous impact on Greenwood and had a very distinguished YMCA career," Stallworth said.
So much so, the Greenwood Family YMCA's employee of the year award is named after Sandel.
"He taught kids to swim, and he always, always took time out to talk to kids," Stallworth added. "He did a lot of things for the 'Y' that was cutting edge for the time."

Stallworth, who has served in his current capacity since 2004, has many fond memories of Sandel.
"One of my fondest memories of him was walking out of the YMCA and finding him in the parking lot talking with somebody," Stallworth said. "On this day, he was talking with (the late) Finis Horne, and they were just talking. Those were two giants of Greenwood standing right before me."
Horne, recognized as the "Father of Lander Athletics," died last year.
It did not take Stallworth long to answer how he would remember Sandel.
