Tragedy struck at an Abbeville residence Monday afternoon when a Greenwood toddler drowned in a backyard pool.
Abbeville County Coroner Ronnie Ashley identified the victim as 2-year-old Ashlyn Adale Kinard, of 4206 S.C. Highway 72-221 East. Officials ruled the drowning accidental, and said an autopsy is scheduled today in Anderson.
The incident unfolded about 12:15 p.m. Monday at 231 S.C. Highway 20. According to Ashley, the child’s grandmother, who was babysitting, went to use the restroom.
That’s when Kinard fell into the pool.
When the grandmother returned to the backyard area, she could not find Kinard. She went back into the house to look for the child, then returned outside and found the baby girl lying at the bottom of the pool. The grandmother pulled Kinard out of the water and began performing CPR. Emergency paramedics responded and began performing CPR on the girl en route to Abbeville Area Medical Center.
Emergency crews were not able to resuscitate the victim, who died just before 1 p.m. at the hospital.
Deputies at the Abbeville County Sheriff’s Office said officers are investigating the incident, but also said there is no suspicion of foul play.
