LOWNDESVILLE — Two 30-yard roll-off containers will be removed by July 7. And scores of residents are not happy about that.
A community meeting featuring officials from Abbeville County and the city of Abbeville were on hand to field questions from more than 50 residents Thursday evening, many of whom expressed frustration with the county’s plan to remove the containers from an unmanned site.
The site experienced illegal and improper dumping. Abbeville County Public Works director Daniel Shaw said environmental as well liability concerns necessitate the removal of the containers.
“The dumbest thing we could have done was what happened,” George Vento said. “It should never have been allowed to get like it is. It should have been fenced in and manned like it was from the beginning.”
Shaw was joined by County Councilman James McCord and County director Bruce Cooley.
