His first two seasons playing football for Ware Shoals High School, Jacob Nelson was a linebacker. Last year, coach Lance Abernathy needed to plug some holes on his defensive line, so he opted to move Nelson to defensive end.
It would have been hard to guess that Nelson was just a first-year defensive end.
Nelson had 108 tackles and 15 sacks to help lead the Hornets to a Region 1-A championship while being named to the All-Lakelands team.
Now, Nelson is preparing to build upon those numbers with two weeks of spring practice that ended last week.

“It was pretty interesting. It was pretty cool,” Nelson said of last year. “I actually plan to improve this year on my total stats. I was actually trying to have a better year last year.”
Nelson will anchor a stout defensive line for Ware Shoals. Returning on the defensive line are defensive tackles Michael Murphy and all-region selection Thomas McClintock.
