There wasn’t a cloud in the the sky on a bright Saturday afternoon.
Those conditions were fitting for a group of students for whom the future is most definitely bright.
Lander University hosted its 149th commencement ceremony Saturday in Finis Horne Arena. Several hundred graduates received their degrees and were cheered on by a capacity crowd of family, friends and well-wishers.


Saturday’s commencement speaker was U.S. Sen. Tim Scott.
Scott, a North Charleston native, has a long background in politics and public service. He was a member of Charleston City Council for 13 years, served in the S.C. House of Representatives and was later elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in the First District.
