Four Greenwood men spent part of their Easter Sunday behind bars following a fistfight in Mathews Mill Village that led to reports of a gunshot being fired.
Eric Attaway, 36, of 709 Truett Ave., was charged with assault and battery and disorderly conduct in connection with the incident. Raven Locklear, 19, and Richard Wiggins, 24, both of 2602 Edgefield St., were also charged with assault and battery. Curtis Piper, 48, of 2500 Edgefield St., faces a count of discharging a firearm in city limits stemming from the incident.
Officers were dispatched to the scene of two of the suspects' residence on Edgefield Street after reports of shots fired Sunday afternoon. According to a city police report:
When EMS crews arrived, they found the two men assaulting a third suspect after chasing him 50 yards up the road. The two men told officers the man came to their home making threats and refused to leave, and they were defending their property. The suspect continued to lob threats at the men even as he was sitting in the back of an ambulance being treated.
A fourth suspect was arrested after telling officers he fired a single shot from a shotgun to try to incite the crowd to disperse during the altercation.
Three of the suspects were taken into custody at the Greenwood County jail. The 36-year-old suspect was taken to Self Regional Medical Center to be treated for injuries. He was subsequently released and taken to the jail. He had yet to processed there as of Monday afternoon.
