The Greenwood Police Department arrested a suspect in a shooting last month along Franklin Street that left a Hispanic man dead.
Tavirous Settles, 17, of 706 Stanley Ave., Greenwood, was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in connection with the incident.
Officers took the teenager into custody Thursday night. City investigators had yet to be reached Friday morning to provide details as to what linked him to the fatal incident.
Greenwood police responded to the 800 block of Franklin Street just south of Milwee Avenue late the night of May 30 and discovered the slain victim. Officials identified the man as Prudencio "Freddy" Chiquin Sis, a 26-year-old Guatemalan native who resided at the New Haven apartment complex. Autopsy results confirmed Chiquin Sis died from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso.
According to a Greenwood police report, officers were initially called out about 9:30 p.m. following reports of an unknown male with a T-shirt wrapped around his head firing a gun. Two Greenwood patrol officer arrived to the scene moments later and found the man lying dead in the road.
Neighbors and loved ones of the victim said he was walking home from his girlfriend's house, just five blocks from his residence along New Market Street, at the time of the shooting. The victim's girlfriend is now leading a grassroots campaign to raise $6,000 to send Chiquin Sis' body back to his homeland Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, so he can be buried amongst his family.
