NINETY SIX — At least one person is dead following a fatal blaze Tuesday afternoon at 1024 Brickyard Road in Ninety Six.
Firefighters battle the remaining blaze at a fatal fire in Ninety Six. The home at 1024 Brickyard Road was consumed by a fire Tuesday afternoon.
Greenwood County Fire Coordinator Steve Holmes said firefighters did not yet have a cause for the fire. South Carolina Law Enforcement Division incident investigators were called to the scene to determine the cause.
"At this time we have no reason to think the cause is suspicious," Holmes said. "We're just going to make sure and find out."
The call for the fire went out at 3:22 p.m. Firefighters from Coronaca, Epworth, Highway 34, Ninety Six, Northwest fire departments and one Saluda County fire department responded to the scene.
As of 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, neither Holmes nor Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox could release information on the victim citing a need to inform the rest of the victim's families.
Ninety Six Town Council member Greg ‘Chip’ Griffin said the house belonged to a James Etheridge. Griffin said Etheridge lived alone at the house though his grandson would stay there occasionally.
"I'm a deacon at Pine Pleasant Church and he's one of our regular members," Griffin said.
Cox and Holmes could not confirm if the victim was Etheridge.
