Greenwood County deputies are investigating a weekend shooting near S.C. Highway 420 in Ware Shoals that left one man hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the leg.
According to a Greenwood County incident report, officers responded to Self Regional Medical Center to speak with the victim Friday evening, after he was transported to the hospital following the incident. The man initially told deputies he was walking west on Joe Oulla Road toward West Main Street in Ware Shoals when a black late-1990 model Honda sedan stopped next to him and a gunman got out of the car and approached him. The man said the gunman pointed the gun at him, he slapped it away and it fired, at which point he realized he'd been shot in the leg. He also said he returned fire to the vehicle from a .380-caliber pistol he was carrying at the time.
Investigators found inconsistencies in the victim's statement and spoke to his girlfriend, who visited the victim in the hospital and discussed the incident with him. She told officers the man said the shooting actually took place on Sanders Road as he was walking to a friend's house. That's where the black Honda stopped next to the man, and a gunman shot at him from a back window, the woman told officers. Officers found eight spent .22-caliber shell casings at the intersection of Sanders Road and Maddox Road.
