The Hat Lady is throwing her hat back in the ring and running for office once again.
Longtime Democratic District 1 Greenwood County Councilwoman Edith Childs filed to seek re-election. The partisan primaries are set for June 10, with runoffs on June 24, if necessary. The general election will be Nov. 4.
Childs, who is widely known for her ornate, fancy hats, is in her 15th year on Greenwood County Council, having first been elected in 1999. County Council’s District 1 encompasses portions of the City of Greenwood and stretches southwest, down through Promised Land and Troy.
At times a political lightning rod, Childs gained a measure of national notoriety several years ago after she inspired Barack Obama — a U.S. senator at the time — during his first run for president with her “fired up, ready to go” chant. Obama often referenced Childs and her chant on his road to the White House.
Childs has been married to her husband, Charles, for 42 years. They have three children and nine grandchildren.
