A Greenwood High School student walking to class Thursday morning was struck and injured by a car as he crossed an intersection by the school.
The student was crossing at the intersection of Cokesbury Road and East Northside Drive just after 7:30 a.m. Thursday.
According to Trooper Tony Keller, with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the driver of a 2011 Tahoe was making a left from Cokesbury Road to East Northside Drive when the pedestrian was struck. The car was traveling toward Pinecrest Elementary School.
The student was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital with multiple injuries. His condition is not known.
"I am very concerned for the safety of this young man," Superintendent Darrell Johnson said in a statement. "I have the student and family in my prayers. The safety of our students is always our greatest concern. We will keep them in our prayers."
The student was identified as Zachary Scates.
District spokesman Johnathan Graves said there is a crosswalk at that intersection. School officials worked with law enforcement during the investigation.
The SUV's driver was Sara B. Odell, 39, of Greenwood. Keller said she was charged with failure to yield right of way to a pedestrian crosswalk.
