A Greenwood man was arrested early Saturday morning after trying to force his way into a home.
Jose Martinez, 26, of 207 New Market St., was charged with first-degree burglary, criminal domestic violence and false name and/or date of birth in connection with the incident.
Greenwood police responded to the victim's residence at New Haven Apartments late Friday night. The woman told officers the suspect tried to force his way into her home and began choking her as he pushed the door open.
The man fled when the victim's boyfriend entered the room. According to a Greenwood police report, the suspect returned and began knocking on the front and back doors of the apartment. When no one let him in, the victim said she heard what sounded like him tampering with a back window. She then called police.
Officers arrived and found the suspect in a nearby residence. When questioned, he gave police a false birth date. He admitted to being at the apartment, and said he was trying to gain entry to see his child but the victim would not allow it. He also told officers he had consumed three beers.
