Greenwood County investigators have made an arrest in a fatal shooting Tuesday night along Kings Court in Greenwood, according to a news statement released Wednesday afternoon.
According to officials from the Violent Crimes Task Force, Marcus Deal, 40, of Greenwood, was charged with murder, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime in connection with the incident.
The shooting resulted in the death of James David Moore Jr., a 27-year-old Greenwood man. Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox released the results of Wednesday's autopsy, which indicated Moore died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Capt. Nick Futch, who leads the Greenwood Police Department's investigations division, indicated officers developed the suspect as a possible shooter and apprehended him just before midnight Wednesday along Blyth Avenue without incident.
He noted the victim and suspect were acquaintances and said there was not yet a clear motive for the shooting.
Officers responded to the 800 block of Kings Court just before 8 p.m. Tuesday following complaints of several shots fired and found the victim lying roadside dying in the front yard of a duplex. At the scene Tuesday night, investigators said the shooting appeared to stem from a dispute inside the residence that extended into the front yard.
According to a Greenwood police report, the man's breathing was extremely labored and he was unresponsive when police arrived. The victim appeared to be clutching his chest. The victim stopped breathing and officers were able to resuscitate him for about 20 seconds by administering chest compressions. The man again lost breath and subsequently died at the scene.
Officials said the investigation is still ongoing.
