A Greenwood man was arrested following reports he struck a child during an argument with a woman.
Kelvin Martin, 31, of 310 Ashcroft Drive, was charged with unlawful neglect to a child and criminal domestic violence in connection with the incident.
Greenwood County deputies were called to Self Regional Medical Center early Sunday morning because of an assault on the 2-year-old boy.
According to a Greenwood County incident report, the child's mother told deputies she was visiting the suspect at his home for the weekend. She said at about 3 a.m. Sunday, she and the man began arguing while she was holding the toddler. During the argument, she said the suspect swung at her with his fist, missed and struck the child in the head.
That's when the woman said she left the residence and subsequently brought the child to Self Regional for evaluation. She said the toddler became so upset after being struck he began vomiting, and the vomit possibly contained blood.
Officers were not able to discern the nature of the child's injuries. The victim's mother was adamant in telling officers she thought the suspect did not intentionally hit the child, and did not realize he had done so.
