WARE SHOALS -- The atmosphere at 17 Wood St. on Thursday afternoon was idyllic.
There was no activity at the home, which rested in a scenic standstill beneath the relentless Carolina sun.
Several bikes and scooters could be seen in the front yard of the colonial-style cottage that sits on a hill along the narrow road. A bouquet of assorted flowers sprouted tall behind the chain-link front gate, which conveyed a welcoming greeting post that read, “Two Old Crows Live Here.”

That was far different from the chaotic scene described at the residence Wednesday night, where law enforcement officials said a man was shot three times during a family argument that turned violent.
The incident unfolded about 9 p.m. at the Wood Street residence and resulted in Larry “Ricky” Reece Jr., a 41-year-old Ware Shoals man, being airlifted to Greenville to be treated for gunshot wounds. Police said the man suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and two to the upper body.
But officials on Thursday ruled the shooting was a case of self-defense and determined Reece instigated the encounter. Ware Shoals Police Chief Harry Irick said he discussed the shooting with a municipal judge and 8th Circuit prosecutors Thursday and classified the incident as a justifiable aggravated assault.
