ABBEVILLE -- Four out of the six possible slots on a commission that will come up with possible capital projects in Abbeville for a proposed penny tax were filled in the past two days.
Abbeville City Council voted 5-3 Tuesday evening to appoint Mayor Pro-Tem Delano Freeman to the Abbeville County Capital Projects Sales Tax Commission. Mark Meyers was the other nominee.

Abbeville City Manager David McCuen said the timeframe proposed by the county was “aggressive” and left the city with a tight timeframe.
“Under this state law, the municipalities have 30 days (from the resolution forming the commission) to appoint their representative to the commission or refuse to appoint someone,” he said. “Right now we’re at 29 days. So we’re looking at losing our spot on the commission.”
McCuen said the county informed the city in the middle of last week that it needed to appoint its representative within the coming days. Councilwoman Bertha Crawford said she felt blindsided by the short timeframe from the county.
