And five extra inches added to the waistline.
There is hope, however, for those looking to shed the holiday weight, or simply to start the new year healthy and fresh.
Here's how some of Greenwoods' fitness centers plan to help you ward off the spare tire:
GREENWOOD FAMILY YMCA
The Y knows the holidays can be a time for weight gain.
According to Kim Tomlinson, Greenwood YMCA member services associate, enrollment definitely increases for the first few months of the new year.
However, Tomlinson emphasized a reinvigorated fitness regime is not a passing whim for most new year recruits.
"I'd say probably three-fourths will stay pretty consistent at least through the summer," Tomlinson said.
