Two Greenwood men were arrested during the weekend following an attempted break-in at an abandoned Hodges residence during which the victim's car was damaged.
Michael Cowart, 27, of 223 Jackson Ave., was charged with second-degree burglary and petit larceny in connection with the incident. John McCrickard IV, 24, of 208 Merriman Ave., faces counts of third-degree burglary, petit larceny, malicious damage to personal property and use of a vehicle without owner's consent stemming from Friday afternoon's encounter.
According to a Greenwood County incident report, the victim was driving by an abandoned residence he owns along Morgan Road, and noticed a pickup truck parked in its driveway. Two men were in the process of leaving the scene with a wood-burning stove from inside the property. When the victim confronted the men and parked his vehicle behind theirs in the driveway, they said they were taking his trash away.
The duo then unloaded the stove and one of the suspects pulled the victim's car out of the driveway, according to the report. The men then left the scene in their vehicle. The suspect left the victim's truck in reverse and the vehicle careened into a ditch, and incurred about $1,200 worth of damage.
