A Saluda County teenager drowned during a swimming accident at Lake Murray Sunday afternoon in Saluda.
Saluda County Coroner Keith Turner identified the 17-year-old Batesburg victim as Millard Waeland Peeples, of 209 Plantation Lane. Results from an autopsy performed Monday afternoon confirmed there was no foul play in Peeples' drowning, Turner said.
According to officials, Peeples was with a group that was riding a pontoon boat along the lake near a public landing at Riverbend Point. The teen jumped off the raft and began swimming toward the shore when he began to struggle and went under. Members of the victim's group were unable to save him.
The Saluda County Sheriff's Office and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources responded to the scene about 4:45 p.m. Sunday and were assisted by dive and rescue teams from Union and Newberry counties in recovering the victims' body within 15 minutes.
