I once was an over-the-road truck driver. I paid a fuel tax for every mile I drove across every state. When I filled up my saddle tanks in a state with low fuel prices and drove to any state and didn’t buy fuel, I still had to pay that state the tax on as many gallons of fuel it would have taken to cross that state according to the miles per gallon the truck gets.

What benefit do the residents of Greenwood County get from adding a penny to the cost of one of Walt’s World Famous hotdogs? Improvements at Lake Greenwood? What improvements?

We Americans all remember where we were on Sept. 11, 2001. This was a wake-up call to us that terrorism had reached our shores.
One of the terrorists released from Guantanamo prison by Obama in exchange for a misguided soldier who had defected in Afghanistan told us “We will see you in New York!”

The woman from North Carolina who was critical of Greenwood library’s policy of keeping the genealogy room locked unless there was a volunteer available wanted it open to any and all when the library was open.

Every time we drive by the pond on Bond Avenue it makes us sick because it looks so bad.
People that worked at Mathews Mill would go the pond just to feed the fish and ducks.

Recently the Index-Journal published an article about same-sex marriage. The authors spoke of the seeming inevitability of the redefining of marriage to include gays and lesbians. The article spoke of the futility of defending our state constitution, which defines marriage as the union between a man and woman.

I am writing this because I want people to understand the consequences of their actions when littering.

I read Mrs. Cheshire’s guest column of Aug. 4 with disgust regarding the treatment of S.C. Trooper Salter.
It seems he was crucified for issuing a speeding ticket to “celebrity” NFL player Sam Montgomery.

One day evil stopped by and took up abode in our country.
Societies that once operated in secret now operate fully in the open. Their evil has encompassed every avenue of life: music, Hollywood, public school system, the media and, lest I forget, the political system.

I have several problems with your editorial “Federal Government working well -- not.”
There are several unsupported claims in your editorial.

There are many things out of order in this great country.
One more problem recently appeared in the Index-Journal about the national rate of gasoline tax being 31 cents a gallon.

The greatest humanitarian crisis in the last 50 years is presently unfolding in South Sudan. Four million people are experiencing food insecurity, and famine is inevitable. Because of civil war, few crops could be planted.

Kids they have to have private transportation from kindergarten to full adult. All my siblings and I had our legs to take us from home to the schoolhouse a mile away. After four years of country schooling, we took a bus to school in town. During World War II, we used rationing stamps to purchase food not grown on a farm.

I volunteer at the Greenwood Country Library on Fridays and, according to the detour map on page 15 in the Festival of Discovery insert, traffic on Washington Street and entrances to the library were closed so I turned onto Marion Avenue and turned right turned onto Edgefield Street.

The current council does not represent the majority of Greenwood taxpayers.
