After finishing in a tie for fifth after the first round of the Class A state golf tournament at Greenwood Country Club, Ware Shoals High School golf coach Tim Gaines wanted his players to shave off a few strokes in the final round Tuesday to finish in the top three.
And the Hornets delivered.
Ware Shoals shot 10 strokes better on Tuesday, jumping two spots in the standings to finish third. The Hornets missed out on second place by one stroke. St. Joseph’s shot a 667, while Ware Shoals carded a 668.


Junior Michael McKee led Ware Shoals with rounds of 76 and 74 for a 150 to finish tied for fifth to earn all-state honors for the third consecutive year. Nathan Lowe shot a second-round 79 to finish with a 161 after an 82 Monday. Damion Moragne carded a 95 and 88 for a 183 total. And, Brandon Evans shot 86-88 for a 174 total.
