Hootie Johnson’s first recollection Tuesday of Ernest Milton "Sonny" Horton was a quick one.
“He could knock ‘em out,” said Johnson, an ex-Greenwood High School football star and former chairman of Augusta National Golf Club, which hosts the Masters golf tournament.
Horton, a member of the first class inducted into the Greenwood Athletic Hall of Fame as a fullback and co-namesake of Furman’s football facility (Pearce-Horton Football Complex), died Friday at 84. The “Pearce” attribution to the complex refers to Greenwood’s Charlie Pearce, father of Horton’s wife, Keeter.
Horton, a resident of Whitmire at the time of his death, is also a member of Furman’s Hall of Fame.
