After spending last season in a constant battle against a lack of depth on his roster, Lander University women’s basketball coach Kevin Pederson targeted that area with the utmost importance while assembling this year’s recruiting class.
It’s only June, but, on paper, he appears to have succeeded in bolstering that depth.

Pederson announced five signees Friday for the upcoming season. Among them are two of the top-10 ranked seniors in South Carolina, a Division I transfer with All-American credentials, and the reigning National Junior College Athletic Association Region X player of the year.
“The best teams I’ve ever coached have always had competition two-deep at every position, and we just simply didn’t have that (last) year,” Pederson said. “When we recruited, the biggest thing we kept telling ourselves was we needed to have two people at each position good enough to start, so that when we’re in practice, those kids really have to push themselves to get better. For most of last year, we had four or five kids that knew they were going to start. Now, we’re going to have that competition.”
