J.R. Washington scored 61 points in a high school game last season, making 10 of 19 3-point attempts.
Needless to say, that caught the attention of Lander University men's basketball coach Jeff Burkhamer. And hardly anyone was happier than Burkhamer after he signed Washington, who is from Manassas, Va., to play this upcoming season for the Bearcats.
According to the Washington Post, Washington's 61-point effort while playing for Stonewall Jackson (Va.) High School was the highest offensive total for the D.C. prep scene since at least the 2003-04 season. Washington, by the way, is Stonewall Jackson's all-time leading scorer with 1,561 points.Who knows? Maybe Washington could be the guy Burkhamer is looking for to replace the graduated David Pruett at shooting guard.
A three-time All-District and All-Region selection, Washington was named second team All-State, and won the Prince William County Slam Dunk title the past two years.
