Laurens County School District 55 , as part of its State of the Schools program, sponsored an essay writing contest at the middle and high school level.

Students were asked to write a 750–1000 word essay on the following prompt: LCSD 55 Superintendent, Stephen G. Peters, has two themes that highlight his first year in the district. Those twin themes are “All Hands on Deck” and “No Child Left Out.” From a student perspective, they were asked what the themes meant to them, how they see them being implemented in schools, and what impact they are having on the culture of the schools in District 55.

The top entry from each grade level will receive a $25 gift card. The overall winning entry from high school and middle school will receive a $100 gift card and be invited to read their essay at the LCSD 55 State of the Schools luncheon Jan. 24.

Sixth grade:Aaresa Sullivan from Sanders Middle School

Seventh grade:Emily Owens from Gray Court-Owings Middle School (overall winner)

Eighth grade:Maelyn Smith from Laurens Middle School

Ninth grade:Travis George from Laurens District 55 High School

10th grade:Alyssa Johnson from Laurens District 55 High School

11th grade:Samantha Martin from Laurens District 55 High School

12th grade:Shaun Kuehn from Laurens District 55 High School (overall winner).
