4-3 vote gives members $1,714 for development
McCORMICK - An arduous McCormick County school district board meeting Tuesday night resulted in a new policy for board trustees as it pertains to out-of-town conferences and travel.
The board - after a meandering, and often confusing, 42-minute discussion - voted 4-3 to divide the board's $12,000 for training equally among seven board members.
Andrea Mann, Verteema Chiles, Eddie Talbert and Al Bell voted to equally divide the professional training money, which was reduced 25 percent from last year's budgeted $16,000. Through the new policy, each board member has $1,714 to spend on training sessions and conferences.
Chairman Jim Lambeth, Karen Beckner and George Yeldell voted against the motion.
The motion was brought forth by Mann, who was initially shouted down by the chairman and not given the opportunity to make a motion. After reconsidering, the chairman asked for a second and received it.
Already, the board has spent $1,418 for sessions Talbert and Bell attended.
Additionally, the board has an annual South Carolina School Board Association convention in February in Myrtle Beach and a Legislative Advocacy Conference and Annual Business Meeting in Hilton Head in December.
