Lander women stymied by Flagler
By DANIEL HARRIS
Two totally different Lander women's basketball teams played Saturday.
The first team, which came out lazy and only managed 16 first-half points; and the second team, which tried to overcome a 12-point halftime deficit, but could not overcome its first-half struggles as the Bearcats fell to Flagler, 60-58.
Lander fell to 6-8 overall, 3-5 in the Peachbelt Conference, while Flagler improved to 6-8 and 4-5.
Flagler was led by Shalya Williams' 14 points and nine rebounds, while Precious Elkins came in off the bench to lead Lander with 17 points and 15 rebounds.
"We told them at halftime we are going to see what kind of kids you are by how you responded," Lander coach Kevin Pederson said, "It was embarrassing what we came out with, down 12 at the half, only scoring 16 points. I don't think we did anything right. I didn't think there was any fight."
Lander played completely different in the second half, exploding for 42 points. After only having four points and three rebounds, Elkins scored 13 points and snagged 12 rebounds in the final 20 minutes.
"(Elkins) had a good second half," Pederson said, "She played better. It was good effort on her part."
