A section of Highway 72 was closed Monday because of a fire at 1340 Highway 72.
The fire started at 1:59 p.m., said Greenwood Emergency Services Director Derek Kinney. Kinney said he was not aware of any injuries as of 4 p.m. Monday.
"They're still doing salvage and cleanup and overhaul and until they clear it, really clear it, we won't know for sure," Kinney said. "If there had been someone in there, I think we probably would have found them by now."
The blaze started in one apartment and spread to the other two apartments in the single-story building.
Firefighters from five different departments responded to the blaze, Kinney said.
Red Cross was contacted to help residents of the apartments and Kinney said it was uncertain how many people were affected.
The Greenwood County Sheriff's Office is investigating the cause of the fire, Kinney said.
"It (the fire) was really big," Kinney said. "It was burning pretty strong, but the firefighters did a great job of knocking it down really quick. That building has been there a long time, so it was basically kindling."
