Your March 12 column, “Serving the public as its eyes and ears,” prompted me to write. Thank you for reminding your readers of the importance of the Freedom of Information Act, all the more so as we celebrate Sunshine Week.

As a Greenwood native living in Washington DC, I like to read the Index-Journal from time to time as one way to stay in touch with my hometown. And, as someone who spent much of her career advocating for FOIA (and working for and with U.S. government agencies), I appreciate how the Index-Journal is using the state FOIA to inform the public.

Thanks to your coverage, I’ve also been following the proposed changes in the state law that would make it an even more effective tool for ensuring government openness and accountability. Let’s hope the bill makes it through this year.
