Prematurely pushing an agenda in the media for consolidation and repeatedly presenting athletic programs, stadium names and mascots, as if they are the chief objection to consolidation, does little more than create walls between communities. Athletics and stadium names are not the priorities of the Due West community, which takes pride in being an academic village.
The mission of an organization is central to making decisions for the organization. “The mission of the Abbeville County School District is to develop proficient, creative, self-motivated students by providing quality educational opportunities in a safe, nurturing environment which supports innovation and lifelong learning.”
While we have had success in athletics, Dixie High School (Due West High School that preceded it) continues to meet and exceed the district mission by focusing on academic success. This is part of the character that makes up Due West and we are not willing to compromise.
Before talking about what needs to be done, the school board needs a sustainable district master plan. It must be complete, unbiased and needs to look at the long-term picture. This plan should be the foundation for all decisions. Getting a firm with expertise in district planning will help.
A master plan should have been created long ago. Abbeville County residents should contact school board members and demand they have a sustainable long-term plan.
